In Psalm 135:5, David confidently and boldly proclaimed - "For I know that the LORD is great, and that our LORD is above all gods."
The Pharoahs and their armies will be destroyed. The house of Ahab will perish, Sodom and Gommorah will perish, the prophets of Baal will be destroyed, the dogs will eat Jezebel.
Are you daily rejecting the temptation to compromise your Christianity and admit the "Baal's" and "Dagon's" of this world to be your God?
David was certain and clear on this subject. With a strong emphasis on the personal pronoun "I," he confessed his unqualified conviction - based on his personal knowledge and experience - that God was "great" - unlimited in His power - and "above all gods" - infinitely superior to every imaginary deity that this world could come up with.
Oh, Saint of God - is this your absolute belief?
Can you also say as the Psalmist - "For I know that the LORD is great, and that our LORD is above all gods"?
Deuteronomy 10:17 - "For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward."
Psalm 48:1 - "Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised..."
Psalm 86:10 - "For Thou art great, and doest wondrous things: Thou art God alone."
Psalm 95:3 - "For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods."
Psalm 96:4 - "For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised..."
Psalm 145:3 - "Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable."
Psalm 147:5 - "Great is our LORD, and of great power..."
Our God alone is the Sovereign Lord. He is the One and only Source from whence all being and power proceeds. He has the power of a conqueror none can resist or rebel against Him. He has the power of a Judge - none can suspend or counteract His will.
He is high and greatly exalted - not weak or feeble in any sense of the word...almighty, infinite, and eternal... the one and only Worker of Miracles Who is the confidence of His people and Whose greatness is
inconceivable.
John Trapp, a 17th Century Preacher, depicted him in this way "He is a degree above the superlative."
He is exalted over all the universe - having kings, rulers, and dignitaries under His dominion, accountable to Him for their decisions and actions, and serving His purposes and plans.
Who would dare to vie with Him in greatness?
Barnes' Notes offers this comment - "Whoever, or whatever was worshipped as God, Yahweh was supreme over all things. He occupied the throne;
and all others must be beneath Him, and under His dominion."
Matthew Henry, the renowned Bible Commentator, adds - "...as King of nations Thou art great, Thy sovereignty absolute and incontestable,
Thy majesty terrible and insupportable, Thy power universal and irresistible. Thy riches vast and inexhaustible, Thy dominion boundless and unquestionable, and, for the proof of this, Thou doest wondrous things..."
