Some 49 Christians were recently massacred by Islamic militants in a raid on the Christian town of Yelwa. According to the Barnabas Fund, ethnic Fulani Muslims reportedly shot most of the victims on Feb. 24 as they ran to a church desperately seeking refuge.
Local Christians in Plateau State have suffered repeated attacks from ethnic Hausa/Fulani Muslim settlers since September 2001. Hundreds have been killed in the violence. Believers in Plateau say militant elements within the Muslim community are working on a strategy to drive out Christians in the state, Barnabas Fund said.
Elsewhere, Muslim students at the Federal College of Education in the northern city of Yola recently burned down the home of the school's provost, a Christian, Compass Direct reported.
During the Jan. 16 attack on John Abubakar Yusufu's house, Muslim assailants also turned on Christian students and staff, with several of them being hospitalized with injuries.
Over the past three years, Federal College has experienced religious conflict between Muslim students and staff and their Christian counterparts. The most recent incident prompted officials to dismiss classes at Federal College and appoint an investigating committee to uncover the causes of the conflicts.
But Christian leaders in Yola, the capital city of Adamawa State, believe the investigative panel will not fairly address the issues underlying the conflict because its members are all Muslims, Compass reported.
